Passport app - to sign the birth certificate or not to sign

Post Sun Mar 15, 2009 5:16 am

I'm applying for a Canadian passport for travel to the USA. As proof of my Canadian citizenship I have opted to send along my birth certificate.

the "instructions" (which are far from very instructional) say that my Guarantor must sign the back of my birth certificate. I thought that sounded a little weird.

I read someone in this forum briefly mention that their application was rejected based on having his Birth certificate signed, stating he ended up having to have a copy signed. However! The "Instructions" claim that I can not use a copy, I have to use the original document.

I am understandably confused (and really worried, as I really cant afford to waste money applying over and over)

does anyone know where my guarantor is supposed to sign?

Original Birth certificate?
Copy?
do I send both things in?

is there someone official I can call and ask?

help!

Thanks

I thought we no longer needed guarantors for passport aps?

I don't recall ever having a guarantor have to sign my birthcertificate for previous applications, only the photos.

Reba, we still need guarantors for passport apps but now it can be any Canadian that already has a passport (as opposed to just doctors, lawyers, clergy, etc).

NewYorkBound, I think you're misreading the instructions for the application. Your guarantor does not sign the birth certificate but you must include the original (no copies, not even certified ones) with your application form. You also have to provide a secondary piece of ID (like your driver's license or health card) but that CAN be a copy. THAT copy has to be signed by your guarantor, along with ONE of the photos.
