Payment re notice of infraction

Post Thu Jun 11, 2009 12:38 am

Greetings,

I am from Canada and recently I received a Notice of Infraction (via traffic camera) from Washington state for not coming to a complete stop before turning right at an intersection. The notice arrive 21 days after the date of issue. The max time to contest the notice was 19 days. What should I do now?

If I do not pay the notice, would the debt show up in Customs, and possibly messing my future US trips?

Would the notice show up in regular traffic cops computers where they may take up collection action should there be a chance encounter?

I don't think Customs and border patrol would ever have record of it. But there is very likely an extradition agreement between WA state and the province you live in, that if you don't pay it you won't be able to renew your provincial driving license.

I think the only problem you're likely to have is if you ever get pulled over in Washington, or possibly another State. Clearly they have access to BC DMV records otherwise they wouldn't have known who to send the ticket to.

An offence like that is not a bar to entry into the US anyway.

I always find it quite interesting the lengths different jurisdictions go to to track you down, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, some seem to be really keen on going after you like the UK and New Zealand but some US states don't seem to care.
Steve.
