Payroll deductions for Canadians in US

Post Mon Dec 26, 2011 5:02 pm

I am on TN in US and I am paying all the "extra" US deductions on every paycheck. like Pension Plan, Social Security and couple of others. Since I will probably not stay in US forever and right now I am Technically a Canadian Citizen, is there away to stop paying these taxes and get a refund for the amounts I paid so far? Like writing a letter to IRS or my accountant can do that? Please advise me.

Not SS and medicare. All US employees (except on F1 otr J1) are required to pay these. You will get some SS when you retire. it has nothing to do with citizenship.

Your pension plan is optional. It is not a tax.

I believe it depends on your situation. There is a tax treaty between Canada and the United States, where if you are paying into one country's "plan", you can opt out of the other. There is some more information on this and the details of a "cetificate of coverage" on the socialsecurity.gov/international/Agreement_Pamphlets/canada.html website.

Another resource for you may be the Canada Revenue Agency's International Tax Services Office 1-800-267-5177

I already explained this. TN is not exempted from payroll tax. Tax treaty has nothing to do with Social security. That would be the Totalization agreement. And that agreement says SS is paid in the country of employment, unless exempted by that country. So canada has no say in this.

He is not taxable in canada, so CRA, which would not give correct info anyways, has nothing to do with this.
