Post Wed Jul 25, 2007 10:14 am

I am a permanent Resident and I want to sponsor my 25yr old daughter who currently lives in Toronto.I sent in the I-130 and wanted to know if anyone else has had experience with this.the only information I have been able to find about how long it takes says anything from 1yr to 10yrs.

Any input greatly appreciated

The only thing I can say about this situation is that this is going to take a long time. It will take a long time because this situation is not first priority in the US. This is because you are not a US citizen and because spouses/children of US citizens get first priority. This situation is labeled second priority. So go ahead and file the I-130 (you might as well file the I-485 with it) just know it's going to take more than a year.

When are you eligible for citizenship? I'd suggest you apply as soon as you are able (if that is in your plans) so that you can change your petition to that of citizen sponsoring child, rather than PR. As a PR, as mentioned above, it'll take A LOT longer than a year.

Visas for family of PRs are numbered, and there is an annual quota that is usually reached by February! However for family of citizens, there is no quota, so the wait is shorter.

As you didn't mention which service centre you sent your petition, its hard to get processing times, but here is the link at USCIS and you can choose your service centre. As an example, the California service centre is currently working on I-130 petitions from February of 2005 for permanent residents sponsoring their children. Vermont is working on June 2006.

In all this, remember that the age and marital status of the child also matters.
