Permanent Resident commuter greencard, want to change status

Postby procrael » Fri Apr 17, 2009 6:42 pm

Good Day Everyone,

I am a Canadian citizen and received my Greencard a few years (classified as C2 status, Permanent Resident commuter (Living in Canada or Mexico)) working in the US while commuting from my Canadian home everyday. Recently I lost my job due to the poor economy. I went into the CIS office at the border and they told me I have six months to find another job or I will have to surrender my Greencard. I inquired about moving into the US as a C1 status (Resident within the United States), the CIS officer told me that I have to make an application at the consulate office to do so.

Is anyone familiar with the procedure of changing from C2 to C1 status under the greencard? This may become important because I am looking at a position with an oversea company. It is trying to set up an arrangement with a US company to borrow the US facility for six months. The position will require working at the US facility not for the US company, but for the oversea company. The scenario seems way too complicated so if I could get the status change to C1 and moved to the US then it should be easier.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure of the exact process, check with www.uscis.gov and www.amcits.com but as I recall it is relatively straightforward, the purpose of it is to give you time to move to the US so obviously if you now want to move to the US that is the next step in the process.
