Lynndyhop, I was just wondering where you go the pet passport forms from? I only have a Vet certificate. thing. I thought that was all we needed upon arrival (along with blood test results, microchip papers and rabies information).

This is gonna be even more difficult for me now, too, because my cat can't fly with me since I have to move out a month earlier than planned. I'm hoping I can rely on my dad to bring my cat, since his 6 months aren't up until July.

It is my understanding that, a passport is issued if you are applying within one of the EU countries. Since you are applying from Canada, a Certificate will be issued.

Good luck with the transition!

Little Mapes is right - though it's been confusing for me, because the Vet in Vancouver still called it the Pet Passport. But it is the Certificate thing only that you need. Not just any vet can issue it - they have to have some special certification, of which I am unclear as to what the title is. The only vet in Vancouver that is able to issue them works for Agriculture Canada and works out at the Airport.

I'm in the same boat as you Tigerlea, I'll be leaving in July and will have to come back in August to get my cats. Apparently someone has to fly with them, or else it's to the quarantine! So complicated!

I'm hoping my dad can fly out and visit and bring my cat with him, so long as he does all that I tell him to do when it comes to my cats paperwork. Razz I guess I'll have to call my vet and find out if she's certified to fill the form out. I'm hoping for the best.

Hi Guys!

Just updating my progress with the Defra Certificate - went to the Airport yesterday and had the Vet with Agriculture Canada approve my certificate - funny that my cats have their paperwork done before mine! Oh well - they still have to wait until August to be able to fly - anyways, the process was quite straightforward - bring your Microchip papers, Rabies certificate, and blood test and he fills out a 4th form that summarizes all the info on those 3 documents, and signs, stamps and seals that he has seen them. Cost $20, and I was in and out in 15 min. I also bought a kennel for my two cats together from a neighbouring company that sells kennels. They passed on a recommendation to fly Air Canada if you can because if you fly British Airways, they contract out their cargo handling in Canada and it ends up being much much more expensive, and you don't know where or who your animals are with!

We're planning on the UK in the fall as well, and bringing our dog too.

As most people have said, it is a lengthly process but in my mind, worth it as we just can't leave him behind or stick him in quarantine.

Our experience thus far is this-

Last vaccination 9 Feb/08

Decision to go late Feb/08

Blood work 26 March/08----> earliest date Bentley can arrive is 26 September/08

Blood test result arrived yesterday (positive 1.99)

We've been using Ladyhaye, which handles all of Zoom Airlines' pet queries. The cost to use them? £720 (CDN$1450). On top of that we had to buy an airline approved crate (great deal on a used one; we recommend the PetCargo series (side note- I had originally bought one too small for our Lab, if anyone needs one I have one for sale <PetCargo>). They have been helpful in providing all the required forms, and once submitted ensures everything is accurate (we had an issue with the blood test result where the vet only gave us the Lab Report, and not the official certificate, which just arrived yesterday). With Zoom, you don't have to fly with them, just as long as someone gets the fleas and ticks shot within the 24-48 hour period before they leave and obviously gets him to the airport. However I think at this stage we will attempt to be on the same flight to Manchester with him (final destination still unknown, either Edinburgh or Manchester/Crewe/Stoke area).

A couple things to keep in mind-

Don't fly with your pet between November and March- the temps are too cold outside and in the air.

Make sure your microchip is ISO certified- we had a scare, but thankfully was OK.

I still have to go see the CFIA in probably around July as once they sign, it's only valid for four months. We're applying for our visas in late July for a September departure.
