Photo requirements for visas

I just realized that the photo requirements for the UK visas are different from the Canadian passport photos especially when it comes to dimensions. The question is, can I submit a photo that is taken primarily for Canadian passports? Or do they require that it must match the dimensions listed? Can I just take a photo of myself using a digital camera, then print it out as wallet-sized photos at Futureshop or wherever, then crop it out so it will match the dimensions? Are they really strict when it comes to the photo?
