Places to shop

Postby mlondon on Thu Mar 17, 2005 8:23 pm

Somewhat silly question, but since I will be on a budget when I first arrive I need to know...where are the absolute cheapest places to shop in London? I realise that its expensive overall, but do they have their version of the Dollar Store and Walmart over there? :D lol Also cheaper grocery stores and places to buy shampoo, toothpaste etc...
Thanks!

Hi Mlondon!
Well there is a dollar store in the UK its called "Poundland" as for grocery stores, try TESCO and Kwiksave maybe there is a Morrisons near you? There is Walmart here but its called Asda.
Hope this helps and welcome to the UK!

Yes, Asda and Tesco are generally the cheapest supermarkets, and most area will be near one or the other.

Even other supermarkets e.g. Sainsbury's usually do a budget range, in plain looking packaging, so look out for those too.

In general, I find supermarket shopping in the UK slightly cheaper than in Canada.

Yes. They have IKEA. Which is reasonably priced (once you've gotten over the sticker shock of Pounds to Dollars) and you start furnishing your home.

Good luck!

Hey, also if you don't mind buying furniture second hand, www.gumtree.com has loads of stuff for sale within London. (same with mobiles).

If you're looking for cheap clothes I think one of the best stores is H&M, but you won't be getting GREAT deals, you'll just feel like you aren't over paying. Which is the most you can ask for. :)

Oh and Virgin Mobile is having some great deals on their website right now, I just got a Motorola camera phone, with SIM card, wireless headset, battery and charger plus 15 pounds of talk time for 60 pounds. Not too bad, for a brand new phone. Same one would cost me $200 CAD.

I also found Boots pharmacy to ahve really good 2 for one deals when i was there this summer, so you can save that way too. :)

Try Matalan for cheap homewares. It costs a pound to join (to get a card)and they do have some good deals.
