Planning a move to Mexico

Post Thu Oct 22, 2009 1:00 pm

Hi y'all! I have been fantasizing for 4 years (since my first trip to Mexico) about moving to Mexico to live. I've been held back by student debt. In Sept. 2010 all my debt will be paid off and I plan to take the money I've saved and head down to Mexico to try to make a go of it. I'm not sure yet where exactly I want to live but I'm going to take a couple trips before I move to decide where.
I've searched the web endlessly for ideas on how to get a job and it seems the consensus is that it is virtually impossible unless you want to open a business (I have NO entrepreneur skills) or teach English. I have worked in the Social Service field here in Canada for 8 years with developmentally disabled individuals and have a ton of experience with that however I doubt that will get me a job down there.
I don't fluently know Spanish yet..I am working on it. I hope to polish my Spanish speaking as I've lived there for awhile.
I've met a few people who have just went on a whim and worked at restaurants and hotels owned by Canadians or Americans who want native English speakers. In my thinking they would want to hire people who's native language is English. I know when I go on vacation I usually seek out the English employees when I have a problem. And most vacationers don't know Spanish at all!
Am I foolish to believe I can go and find a job and create a life for myself? I have enough money saved for a few months of job hunting.

Hi There, I am a Canadian (John) who has been doing business with Mexico for over 13 years and I know the country quite well as I've travelled most of it except above Monterrey (I've covered it in detail (over the years) from Quintanaroo right up to Nuevo Leon).
I live in BC and am planning a move to Mexico (am house hunting as we speak) VERY SOON. I am quite familiar with a lot of "issues" regarding living/working in Mexico. Please let me know if you need some advice on any item in particular and if I can help, I will be most happy to.
My email is joaoap12@yahoo.ca if you need to contact me.
Saludos, John

Hi, Jessica here. I'm planning on moving to Mexico City ASAP (within 6months to a year from now) but I need a job cuz I have a cat and she is demanding! Seriously though, I just finished a field placement in a museum in DF but the economy is so bad right now blah blah...Anyways, does anyone know of a good website that I can go to to look for jobs. I've been looking on EDERTI's site, but they don't really specialize in getting jobs in Mex for foreigners.
Thanks.

Check out segundamano.com.mx for apartments and rooms for rent in Mexico City (or anywhere else in Mexico for that matter).

Hello,

I have decided to move to Mexico City. Currently I live in Toronto, Ontario. I am Canadian Citizen. I am Piping Designer working with AutoCad, Bently and Solid Works. I was wondering if I can get job similar to my profession? If not, what are my options? I do not speak Spanish (but I’ll need to learn it) what are the procedures of me coming there to live? I would like to find work before I go, but from reading previous postings it probably won’t happen. I can also speak Ukrainian and Russian would that help in any way? How is the salary comparing to the lifestyle?

Any tip, suggestion is greatly appreciated
Thank you,
