Planning move to Berkshire

Post Wed Apr 27, 2011 10:03 pm

Hi Everyone,

New member/poster, and I work for a multi-national company. I'm looking to take a position in the UK, and am wondering if anyone can recommend good areas in Berkshire? I would be working out of Slough, but am thinking of Wokingham or Windsor as places to live.

I've frequently dreamed about living in the UK/Europe, and although I do have some family in the London area(whom i haven't seen in many, many years), I would be making this move solo.

I had a fair amount of exposure to British culture growing up as a result of my Mum and her family being from there (I love British TV, have countless copies of Beano and Dandy books), but of course, there's no substitute for the real thing.

I would love to hear some stories from people on how their adjustment process was, and what their overall impressions of living in Britain are.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I don't check this forum often, just saw your post. I live in Wokingham, we moved here from Calgary in 2007. My husband is British (and Canadian actually) and we have 3 children all born in Calgary.

If you haven't moved countries before, it does take a while to settle in, although I found a fantastic circle of friends via my children's school who have been a huge help to me. Personally I find it very busy here. There's no getting away from people no matter where you go. I do feel lucky in that we spend the summer holidays back in Canada. If I didn't have that I think I would go crazy!

Things are more expensive generally. The big ticket items (houses, cars) tend to be more. However the exchange rate has shifted so the gap has narrowed. I'm sure Windsor would be more expensive than Wokingham but both are pleasant places to be.

Hope that helps somewhat!
