Planning to backpack Europe! Looking for a travel buddy

Postby CalgaryJay » Wed Mar 07, 2007 11:35 am

Hey

I'm looking to backpack Europe in May for approx 2 months and was wondering if anyone was thinking about doing the same that would maybe want to travel together. I am new to the whole backpacking thing and have thought about doing it myself but would prefer a partner to travel with.

It can be either Female or Male and preferrably from Calgary but I guess that doesn't really matter either.

You can post here if interested or add me to MSN and we can chat!

Thanks

Jason

I would definitly join you. if I was not working :(

If you want some tips tell me, I did backpack Europe. don't know what kind of destinations you are planning to see. I will tell you where I went. maybe it can help you find destinations or if you have question about some of them.

London, Barcelona, Paris, Lyon, Grenoble, Geneva, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Venice, Rome. and some smaller cities in France and in Germany.

Hope you have a nice trip. by the way I did a lot of my backpacking alone. but you always meet people in Hostels and it's often very fun :)

Yeah I am planning to get a Eurorail pass so that I can go all over and hopefully sleep some of my nights on the train to save on hostels.

I would like to go all over and maybe even stay a little longer to fit more in, I just love travelling and need to get some travelling in before I get too serious into any more relationships and have to worry about kids and the like.

I will definitely ask you some questions about some of the places you stayed, right now I am reading up on all the possible places I can see and then I can ask you some specifics if your willing to answer a few for me.

I have thought about travelling alone and I may end up doing that if I don't find someone to travel with. Did you like travelling alone, did you spend a lot of your time alone? I just think I would prefer to have someone around most of the time rather than to try and do it all by myself.

I'm new to it so if you have any tips or suggestions, feel free to let me know!

Thanks

Hey Jason,

I've backpacked around Europe several times, alone and with friends.

There's definitely pros and cons to each!

Traveling along I met a tonne of people, and was rarely ever 'alone'. I guess it depends on your personality too though. Sure there are some stretches where you feel lonely, but it's not too bad.

Traveling with someone - This can be great to share the good times with someone, but also you have to both be really clear about what you want to see and do, and respect each other. I know some people that would travel together, split up for two weeks, then meet up again somewhere else.

Do you have any idea where you want to go?

I also did some part alone and with some people. not always with the same persons.

When I was alone usually I would visit stuff during the day alone or with someone I met in the Hostel. then at night if you are in an Hostel with a bar you can really meet a lot of people and go out with them after.

If you are with some people then sometimes it's awful how some small decision can take forever (I don't want to be sexist. but when I was with girls it would take hours to decide what/where to eat). But then when you visit stuff it's nice to share with them.

I was afraid the first time to go alone. but then I realized that there is nothing to be afraid of and that you will meet nice people along the way. :)

Feel free to ask me any questions.

I would like to travel all over Europe, see as much as I can! I'm the kind of person that loves new places and is always up for trying something new. I don't really have any specific sites I want to see per say, I woould love to go to the UK as well since my Dad is from Scotland but as for Europe, I'd like to go anywhere!

As for going alone, I am willing to try it even though it does scare me a little, I would really prefer a companion to share the memories with but I guess I'll see, I have tried getting all my friends to go but no-one is willing to go this long and backpack it which really sucks. I was supposed to book with my best friend but his girl became pregnant so now he has to stay home to look after the baby.

I am also wanting to do the back packing around Europe thing too, I am in need of a travel buddy. for some reason not to many people I know are interested. I have to wait till the first week of November, I need to finish school and write by board exams and then Im outta here.

I think doing it alone would be a great experiance, but for me personally I would feel alot safer having someone there with me and also to share the whole experiance with.

Good Luck Jay, I hope you find someone to do this with!

Thanks! I hope you're able to find someone as well! Looks like you've got a lot more time than I do so I'm sure you'll find someone without an issue.
