POEs

Post Mon Apr 20, 2009 5:07 pm

I need some help in picking the POE.

Has any one recently applied for TN from Rainbow, Lewiston, Peace Bridges or even Thousand Island or Vermont POEs?

Please let me know how it went.

I shall be greatly thankful to you for help..

Peace Bridge is fine. The people there know what they're doing. I've heard horror stories about Lewiston as far as TNs go, but I've gotten F-1 stamps there without any problems. Don't know anything about the Rainbow Bridge or Thousand Islands, but some people have had difficulties with the folks at Highgate Springs in VT. The better crossing in that area would probably be Champlain, NY (Autoroute 15 to Interstate 87).

I'm in the same boat - looking for a good POE.

I've gotten two TN's at Rainbow Bridge and both were fairly painless (well, as painless as dealing with USCIS can be).

I've heard good things about Peace Bridge & will probably use that POE next time. Planning to apply for a 3 year - any suggestions for or against this?

Just got my 3-year TN at the Peace Bridge a little over a month ago. It was effortless. Just make sure your letter states that you will be employed for a 3-year period.

Experts,

I'm also looking for a good POE. I plan to drive from Kelowna BC down to the border at Oroville, WA. Has anyone ever crossed at this point? I have accepted a job offer from an american university for a teaching position starting soon, so I plan to leave monday morning and hopefully get thru the border then catch a flight out of Spokane. Is this a good idea? Any advice or tips for me this being my first time applying for the TN. Is the $50 fee in canadian or american currency? Just making sure...

Thanks

I don't know anything about that POE - maybe others might have more insight there. As for driving down to catch a flight, make sure you leave yourself with ample time to catch the flight in Spokane. I have gotten TNs in as little as 15 minutes and as long as 3 hours; it really depends on the POE and the staff and the number of people waiting to be seen. You might also want to get a refundable flight or find out if it's at least possible to change your flight if you need to, in case your TN is denied.

The fee is actually $56 at a land crossing (an extra $6 for the I-94 card, which is included in the cost of flights to the US). It is in US dollars. Most POEs accept credit cards as well.

Phone them and ask is probably the best option.
Steve.

Got denied at Oroville, WA. No interview, not even any questions. They took my folder went to a back room, called me in and took my fingerprints and said my letter wasn't accepted. I still got charged $71.

CBP did allow me to enter and travel to the state where my belongings were on a 2 day parole basis, and they weren't so pleasant to me when I came back, on the canadian side. Pretty frustrating process when things don't work out.

Well, crap. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad go of it. Did they give you a reason for the denial? Usually when they take your paperwork to a back room, it's being reviewed by the supervisor prior to approval or denial, but in my experience they have always told me the reason for the denial, be it wording they didn't like, or other offer letter deficiencies. There are key points they look for in the letter, and if something is missing, they'll send you back, although typically you can re-apply with a corrected letter. In going to the border to get former TN-1's, I've never had to pay when it was refused, but getting fingerprinted and photgraphed is pretty standard.
