Poll: Living/working in the EU

Post Sun Apr 15, 2007 6:37 am

Ok, I have a poll for everyone.

If you had your choice of where to live in any EU city/country where would it be?
London, Berlin, Rome, Dublin, Paris, etc.
Please provide reasons and experiences (if any).

Cheers.

Well, I already live and work in London and like it.

Would love to live in Paris, but don't speak enough french. Would also love to live in Amsterdam. Edinburgh is nice and has a small town feel to it.

Brussels is hideous.

Have only been to about 10 countries. I need to see more to give a definite answer.

BBum- are you asking just for fun or are you planning to leave your sunny abode?

Ya its a tough call. I used to think I'd like to live in Paris, but after being there this past summer - its way too dirty and polluted for me. Nothing like waiting for a metro train with 500 other people in a hot humid underground station, then fighting to get on the train. Ugh.

London would maybe be nice, but haven't spent enough time there. Rome - No way (reasons like Paris) and Dublin - never been but have heard great things.

Boy Mercy you sure are a sharp one . . .

I am asking for reasons being that:
1) we cannot reside here for more than 6 years.
2) assuming my wife receives her finnish citizenship soon; we're considering trying EU on for size when our work permits expire.
3) the political BS has gotten very deep recently, making us ex-pats feel like slaves; but slaves with an option to leave nonetheless.
4) It's extremely expensive here, we pay $3K US/mo. (ground floor of a house - 2 bedroom) to put things into perspective.

We're targetting Dublin & plan on a fall trip to wet our whistle.
London would be interesting (never been), but I see it as an EU NYC, which I despise; also heard it's expensive & over-populated.

I just don't feel like returning to T.O., never did enjoy it there.

Cheers.

If your wife is getting Finnish citizenship, have you thought of Helsinki? I thought it was a really nice city when I visited in 2004. A little expensive, but most likely cheaper than what you're paying right now!

A friend of mine lived in Dublin for awhile though and loved it.So I'd definitely say its recommended.

To me, Helsinki = near arctic circle.
I have thought about it, but not too seriously.
I will re-evaluate it.

Thanks for the input guys, keep 'em coming. ;-)

Was there ever any doubt?!?!

I'm going to Krakow next month and Dublin in September. Will advise on their suitability for your needs! ;)

Being a French Canadian, people would think Paris would interest me, but I think it's a nice tourist city, but would not want to live there.

London. looks too crowded to me, but I love the city anyway.

Rome. I don't speak italian and it's too "touristy" and crazy.

I just got a job in Berlin and will be moving there in a month or so, that is definitly my favourite city to live in. A lot of things to do, nice city, a lot of people but also the area is big, so in some places it's quite calm. There is some forest and lake reachable by the U-Bahn. and my girlfriend lives there. To make a summary. I just love this city.

Clapoti: Great feedback . . . I've been to Germany, love the beer halls & autobahn, good luck on your journeys.

Mercy: We'll be in Eire near that time too, see you then. ;-)
