Possible to getFrench passport if Father born in France?

Post Fri Sep 04, 2009 6:44 pm

Hi,

My Father was born in France yet moved to Canada as a kid. He does not currently hold a French passport.

With this said, is it possible to obtain a french passport due to the fact that I am his son?

Thanks,

Good day 337.

Your best bet to answer your questions is to contact your nearest French consulate. There is a main one in Vancouver and I know that there is an office representative in Edmonton.

I went through the process, but there is a lot of paperwork. It was easier for us because my parents always stayed registered with the consulate. You will have to prove to them that your dad was born there first by providing a copy of his birth certificate and to register yourself as a French citizen.

It may be easier said than done, but once you are a registered citizen at the consulate, than it is no problem getting the passport. And it is good for 10 years as opposed to the Cdn 5 years.

Again the consulate will tell you exactly what to do, but it will be one step at a time. You have nothing to loose by calling or sending an e-mail.

Where are you at in Canada?
