Power Bar - Single Adaptor?

Post Sat Aug 09, 2008 12:39 pm

Hi there

I'm moving to Canberra in a week and a half and have some power bars I could take over with me. I was wondering if I could just put a single power adaptor onto the power bar and plug that into the wall, and that would change the voltage for the attached plugs on the bar? Would this work? Just trying to get away from buying an adaptor for each item.

Thanks!

Are they canadian power bars? I would think you will need a voltage converter, you don't want to blow any of you electrical items.

Yes, it's a Canadian power bar. I was wondering if I could only use the converter for the power bar, and the attached plugs on it would correspondingly have their voltage changed as well.

I don't know enough about voltage converters, but I did feel that they may have an amperage limit ?

I did look at one on the jaycar website, and it mentioned:
"240 - 115V converter Rated at 120 watts 1.0 amp"

Not sure what would happen if too many things went through it at one time.

Ive never used one, but I do know someone who left his computer set at 110v, and plugged it in to our 240v, and it fried it.

Most electrical items like laptops etc are actually running on around 12 volts beleive it or not. I brought my Acer from Canada and bought a plug here with the right end to fit into the outlets and it works just fine. It's a 240 volt machine that brings the voltage down to charge the battery anyway so its good. Same with the 7" portable DVD player. Theres a few other things as well and I havent had any trouble at all.
Check the back of whatever your bringing to see what the reccommended voltage is and if its 240, you'll be good.
Leave the power bar at home, theyre cheap here anyway and you could probably jam something else into your suitcase that is more useful.
Hope that helps some.
Enjoying the heck out of this country!
