Pregnancy & birth in Australia

Post Tue Mar 25, 2008 7:47 pm

My husband and I are Canadians living in Sydney on a 457 and we're looking to start a family. As I understand it, OHIP will cover the costs of our doctors visits and delivery (or cover up to the amount of those cost if we had done so in Ontario).

I'm wondering if there are any Canadians (who aren't Australian residents or married to an Aussie/resident) on this forum that have had their children in Australia.

If so, please let me know how the process worked for you -- would be great to get any tips and feedback.

thanks!

Sorry I can't help as we're permanent residents. My only word of advice would be to actually check with OHIP first and get EVERYTHING in writing. I would actually even double check because sometimes the advice you get isn't always correct.

Nothing against OHIP because I've never dealt with them. I just wouldn't want you stuck with a huge bill and a newborn!

Have you applied for to be permanent residents? Or are you on the 457 and will be returning to Canada when the time is up? I only ask because I believe if you're on a 457 and have applied for a permanent visa (like the 175) then you would get medicare just like a PR.
