Preparing to Move to N. Ireland

Post Thu Apr 02, 2009 10:05 pm

Hello,
My friend and I are planning on moving to Northern Ireland in a couple years once we are done university. We are both able to claim British citizenship through our parents and so I guess the next step for us is to get British passports? Since neither of us have ever moved to a new country before we figured we should plan ahead just so there are no nasty surprises when the time comes for us to move.

If there is anyone who has been in the same situation and would be able to give us any information on if there is anything else we need to do to make our citizenship offical, and what types of cards or documents we will need (besides the National Insurance number [NIN] card) once we are in Northern Ireland that would be great.

Thanks so much in advance,
Alexandra

As I pointed out in the Northern Ireland section, beware of the fact that the laws in Northern Ireland are similar to but generally not the same as the rest of the UK. When you're looking up legal information make sure it actually is for Northern Ireland.

Other parts of the UK also have some different laws because of devolution, but Northern Ireland has had for many years a different legal system.
Steve.
