Previously married to a US citizen.

Post Mon Aug 09, 2010 8:16 pm

Hello,

I am a 33 year old Canadian citizen. I am getting married to a US citizen, he is a University Professor and will be returning to the US in a year and I will go with him (hopefully). My question is, in my early twenties I was married to a man from California. I lived between the US and Canada for about 2 1/2 years, mostly there but I never legally immigrated there (this among other things was the reason for our divorce). Is this going to cause me problems immigrating there now? Does anyone have any experience with this?

you may want to checkout visajouney.com for relationship visas to ensure you do it legally! 1 just can not move to the USA and live there.

If ur not married, check out the k1 forum---fiance visa---takes anywhere from 6-9 months----if ur lucky enough to live in Manitoba and West, ur interview would be in Vancouver, which is the much faster consulate to go to!! The only other consulate is Montreal, and they tend to be slow!!

if ur married look at the cr-1 and k3 forum! k3 is pretty much obsolete, as it takes about the same amount of time as the cr-1 BUT it costs more and not as "good" as the cr-1! At 1 time the k3 was much faster, but thats no longer the case!! cr-1 taking anywhere from 8months to well over a yr to get!! Montreal is the ONLY consulate in canada that does the CR-1 interviews!! Vancouver does the k1 and k3!! As well montreal does k1,k3 and CR-1!! confuse you,lol

Everything u need is on VJ, even examples of filled out forms! paperwork is the easy part, its the waiting that sucks!! and lawyers do NOT speed it up, they just lighten ur wallet, lol

Some paperwork you wil require:( Cdn citizen)
---Long form birth cert (has parents info right on the certificate)
---Police background check in all names used--One does not require a background check from every city u have lived in Canada, they system does that, Ensure they check Canada wide. Rcmp do them, as well as many local police. If you HAVE HAD a criminal record, u need to get finger prints done as well. NO criminal record, just the background check. As well you will need a background check from any country you have lived in for more than 6 months since the age of 16

---Divorce certificate

Long form birth cert are easy to get so is the Cdn background check.

Eventually one has to have a physical completed by one of the APPROVED physicians. Only have them in Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto (maybe ottawa as well???)

you will find this info and much more on VJ
