Primary residence in the US while working in the oilpatch

Post Tue Nov 01, 2011 10:12 pm

Howdy,

I'm a wellsite geologist currently based out of Calgary. With my job, I spend fairly long periods of time out in the middle of nowhere playing playstation (and looking at rocks from time to time) ;-)

My issue is that I've recently been invited by a guy to live with him at his ranch near the Canadian border in Washington state while I'm not in the field. My schedule is inconsistent, but is essentially 2 weeks on, with 4 or 5 days off work at a time (along with a 1-2 month period in the spring where I do not work).

I'm wondering if it would be feasible to have this place in Washington as my primary residence while I'm not working in the field? I would be working exclusively in Canada, and likely couldn't apply for American citizenship (at least until same-sex marriage is a possibility in Washington state, I suppose).

I'm curious what I would need to have my primary residence in the US as a Canadian, while working in Canada.

Thanks
