Professional Designation vs: Job Title

Postby culturevulture on Mon Jan 21, 2008 6:58 am

Hi Everyone,

Perhaps the answer to my question is obvious.if so please accept my apologies. :) I am Canadian and my professional designation is Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) which is on NAFTA's list of those qualifying for TN-1 Visa status. The job I am being offered in the US requires my being an MLT however it has a job title other than MLT. (I am not licensed as an MLT in the US). The rules for TN-1 Visa status that I have read only indicate that I need to be an MLT professional. I want the employment offer and my resume to match as closely as possible to avoid confusiion with immigration. It is all very ambiguous to me. Can anyone shed some light on this matter? I am in a bit of a time crunch.

Job title is meaningless, if you perform the duties of a medical lab technologist (not a technician) then you qualify. The duties control qualification. However if you want to avoid confusion, if in fact you perform the duties of a medical lab technologist then you may use that generic title.

That is very good news, thanks. So if I am performing the duties of an MLT however not a licensed MLT in the states, will they deny me?

Make sure your application letter properly ties the job title you are using to the Nafta Occupation so there is no confusion for the immigration officer.
