Provincial Driver's License renewal for Expats

Provincial Driver's License renewal for Expats

Postby YXE » Wed May 06, 2009 12:25 am

I need advice or information about procedures regarding the renewal of a provincial driver's license.

In Saskatchewan, driver's licenses are renewed every year which I've been doing while overseas for the past five years. This year, I was denied renewal because I have non-resident status. I'm not sure how to tackle this problem. What is the procedure in other provinces? Can anyone offer me suggestions as to handle this situation?

Thanks for any advice that you can offer!

If you're not living in Saskatchewan, then you don't need an SK driver's license. Same as any other province. If you are not resident, you don't get a driver's license there.

If in future you decided to move back to Canada, your foreign driver's license in most cases can just be exchanged for a Canadian one. Easy peasy.

It's not a good idea to have anything only a resident can have because it's a residential tie for tax purposes.

I'm a Canadian expatriat in South Africa. Prior to moving to South Africa I lived in Saskatchewan. I no longer have any address in Saskatchewan so motor vehicles won't renew my license. Here in South Africa they won't give me a driver's license because they don't issue them to "foreign nationals." I contacted the Canadian Embassy here and they don't have any solution. Please help!

Looks like you would have had to get a SA driver's license almost immediately upon arrival. If you have let your Sask DL lapse, you may have a problem.

However, it is not true that foreign nationals are not entitled to DL, see:

http://www.southafrica-newyork.net/cons ... icense.htm

It states that foreign DL's can be exchanged for SA DLs.
