Q:canadian passport renewal

Post Fri Jul 11, 2008 10:52 am

I have to renew my passport abroad. I was told by a counselor officer at the embassy that I would have to surrender my citizenship card even if I apply in person at the embassy. I would prefer not to do this because of clear reasons - if it is lost I will be in a desperate situation without any ID and no possibility to restore it from abroad. Would be thankful for similar experience/suggestions.

I have been a consular officer at a Canadian Embassy (now retired). Your citizenship certificate or other documentation submitted will not leave the Embassy (i.e. it will not be sent off to Ottawa or anywhere else) but the Embassy needs to examine it carefully to ensure no fraud is being committed. Your documentation will not be lost.

Sorry, I meant to add that if, for any reason, you do lose your citizenship certificate while abroad, the Embassy can help you apply fort a new one. Of course, you will still need to submit whatever ID you can come up with such as birth certificate, etc.

Jausman,

thanks for your answer. I believe you are right. Since I am abroad I am very nervous.

Hello,
I am in the similar situation, living currently in France. My passport will expire in February and I am quite nervous having to mail out my citizenship certificate (original) and other original docs (i.e. driver license, etc). Is that my only option? The clerk in the embassy let me understand that I will have to mail it out to Ottawa myself...
I also have a question re guarantor - can my husband be my guarantor since he is of the required profession?
Thank you very much in advance for your advice.

Does anyone know a photo studio in Paris that can take a photo for CDN passport? Embassy in Paris does not provide any useful info in this regard.
Thanks in advance
