Qatar - common law status, unmarried couples

Post Wed Jun 25, 2008 6:54 pm

Help
My girlfriend and I want to move to Qatar this fall. She has taken a job there. The issue is that she is separated but still married (not to me)while I am single. Will they let us in as a couple? I do not currently have a job in Qatar but plan to acquire something after we get there.

Thanks

You cannot be common-law if she is still married to someone else.

You can't come to Qatar and expect to live together if you are not married. It is illegal under Qatari law. My husband and I have different last names, and we had to produce or marriage certificate as proof that we are married.

As well, entering the country separately will be difficult if you do not already have a job lined up. To gain residency in Qatar you need to be "sponsored" by a company or a spouse.

Best of luck!
