Question about F-1 OPT to TN status

Postby mentos » Mon May 14, 2007 8:08 am

Hey everyone! New to the forum! Originally from Regina, SK and have resided in ND for 5 years. I just graduated from 5 years of university on an F-1 student visa. I applied for Optional Practical Training (OPT) under the F-1 status and will begin work June 1 of this year. My F-1 OPT will expire May 31, 2008.

I have a few questions that I won't be able to ask my international student coordinator until june because she went to travel abroad. I would like to apply for the TN visa under the social work classification. I was told about it from the coordinator, but I am still confused after reading a little bit about the TN visa about the application process.

As far as my drivers licence and insurance that won't have to change until I change to TN status? As of now because I am in F-1 status I can keep my canadian drivers licence, I drove a ND registered & insured vechile up until 2 weeks ago when it crapped out on me. Can anyone help me?

Much appreciated!

In order to get a TN, you have to have a job offer from a US company who is willing to sponsor you for it. Only then can you apply for a TN, as far as I know. They are employer specific as well, so if you are hired by one company and you are approved for a TN visa, and then they lay you off or fire you or you quit, but then get another job offer from another US company, you'd have to go back to the border and re-apply for a new TN.
