Question about Right of Abode

I am planning on applying for my right of abode this week. I was just curious if anybody knows how long it takes? Also does anybody know if you have to plan to travel right away like you do with the Ancestry visa? I am not planning on going to the UK until Jan. The reason I want to know about the timing is I am heading to Florida in October and even though I can travel to the US without my passport I find it much easier to travel with it instead of having to use BC and DL. Thanks in advance for any advice.
