question about taxes, dual citizenship, OHIP while in the US

Post Mon Jan 10, 2011 10:36 am

Hey guys!! I just received my greencard for permanent residency in the States. In three years I can apply for citizenship. With that being said, what's the rule for Canadians and dual citizenship? Do I have to pick one or the other or can I keep my Canadian status and be a US citizen too? BTW - I was born and raised in Ontario.

Second, this is my first year living in the States - I moved here in January 2010 for school and then married my USC sweetie a few months later. I imagine we will file our taxes joint here in the US but do I also have to file back home in Ontario? I do not have a T4 for 2010.

Last, I would like to continue seeing my doctors for yearly check ups, etc in Ontario. I still have my OHIP card and it doesn't expire for a few more years. May I continue using OHIP when I go home for visits? I still have a residence there with my parents. How does this all work? Do I need to contact the ministry of health?

Thanks for all of the advice!!!!

You can have both citizenships. neither country cares.

One you married, you were no longer considered student status, and thus you gave up Cdn residency (that is a good thing). Now file your departure return in cnada, and full MFJ in US.

For tax questions I answer more fully at forums.serbinski.com

Your OHIP is dead once you left and did not advise them. card expiry date is meaningless. You should now be covered under spouse's medical plan, and seek local healthcare.
