Question for CBP officers and others: Management Consultants

Post Wed Jul 08, 2009 1:10 pm

Hello,
I am a Mgt Consultant with over 22 years worth of consulting experience under my belt. Given the "Mgt Consultant" title is highly scrutinized I have collected experience letters from my previous clients to show as proof of my work experience- and this has worked great so far. However, I am curious what sort of degree does CBP look for if one does not have that over 5 year experience? The manual says "Canadian or Mexican citizens may qualify as management consultants by holding a Baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree or by having five years of experience in a specialty related to the consulting agreement"

As far as I know, in Canada, there are only a handful of undergraduate degrees offered that borderline real Mgt Consulting but even that is not a Bachelor of MC as one would expect. Also, if one does not have a degree, would a certificate from Canadian Management Consultants (CMC) be okay ? I never bothered to get one because of the cost associated with it, but I am wondering if it be beneficial in the long run.

More of the same. Just put together you timeline of experience backed up by letters from some employers, letter of employment, and $50. We only scrutinize because there is such a high rate of Fraud with MC TN's. Just read through this forum for a few minutes, there is always someone trying to get around the Laws to get their TN status.

Thanks lawsrlaws. Also, do you know if there is even a degree out there for MC? Have you had anyone present it to you in the past? I had a conversation on this same subject with a coworker of mine, and neigther of us believe there is aan actual degree for MC out there- at least not during the time we were young lands, but things may have changed now.

You don't need a degree with "management consulting" in the title, it needs to be a degree which reasonably relates to the job, so an MBA or BA in management would be examples. If you're going in as a management consultant to an engineering company then an engineering degree and evidence of some prior management consultancy might be more relevant, etc.

Management consultants provide services which are directed toward improving the managerial, operating, and economic performance of public and private entities by analyzing and resolving strategic and operating problems and thereby improving the entity’s goals, objectives, policies, strategies, administration, organization, and operation. Management consultants are usually independent contractors or employees of consulting firms under contracts to U.S. entities. They may be salaried employees of the U.S. entities to which they are providing services only when they are not assuming existing positions or filling newly created positions. As a salaried employee of such a U.S. entity, they may only fill supernumerary temporary positions. On the other hand, if the employer is a U.S. management consulting firm, the employee may be coming temporarily to fill a permanent position. Canadian or Mexican citizens may qualify as management consultants by holding a Baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree or by having five years of experience in a specialty related to the consulting agreement.
