You declare it to CBP at the border and tell them you're importing your vehicle as a personal effect.

Your question is answered above in this thread, you need to take the car back to the POE, re-enter and tell them you're importing your car.

Hi there,
I have a question, I have an American Driving License, issued in Florida in 2000, it was expired in October 2006. I am not an American citizen, I just visited US and I took this license from there. I live now in Bahrain, Where I couldn't exchange my Americain driver license because it is expired. Is there anyway, to send it back to Us via mail and exchange for a valid one???

Canadians (and non-Americans) with a Florida drivers license for their Florida registered vehicle are in for a rude shock when they go to renew it after Nov 1 2009. You now have to take two written tests and an actual driving test, pass them and pay $45 (up from $20). The alternative is to "surrender your Canadian drivers license". Imagine. An American with a drivers license from any other state wanting to get a drivers license for his Florida registered vehicle just has to pass a vision test. Discriminatory? You bet. Add outrageous, too.

Those of us who own property in Florida and do not wish to spend days of driving getting there each season, and so instead buy a car for use there, are being penalized. Yes, you can drive with your Canadian license (so my insurance company says) but if you own property in Florida you need a Florida driving license.

I would like to know if anyone can tell me who to complain to about this, both in Canada and in Florida.

Hi there
I am a Canadian citizen and I have a second home in Arizona. We only travel there a few times a year as we're still living and working in Canada. I wanted to buy a car in USA to leave at my home there and in acquiring insurance, the company I am getting good quotes from requires me to have a USA driver's license. Am I allowed to have a Canadian one and a US one at the same time? Does this open any other cans of worms for me so to speak? Like tax implications? Thank you for any help you can share.

Nothing forbids you from having both a Cdn and US DL simultaneously (unlike 2 state or 2 prov DLs).

However, you run into 4 raodblocks: First, you need to actually qualify to get a DL in the state you are visiting, most states do not recognize tourists as residents, even those with a fixed address.
Second, most states now require a Social Security number to get a DL since 9-11; you are not eligible for SSN.
Third, many states have side-deals with some provinces to take Prov DL when issuing state DL; many don't.
Fourth, your insuarnce is based on where you live. You may have trouble making a claim on the car if soemthing were to happen while you are living in Canada.

Not saying you won't be able, but it won't be easy and may not provide the coverage you need.
