They can ask you anything. Remember also that they can search your car and personal belongings without probable cause or even reasonable suspicion, many people are not aware of this. This is how lots of folks get into hot water. A classic example is the Canadian applying for visitor status when he or she is going to attend interviews/look for a job. CBP searches the briefcase and finds resumes and then refuses entry.

Hmmm, the most unusual question I had asked was at the first stop, not the office where you apply itself. When I told the inspecting officer I wanted to apply for a TN at the office, he asked "Under what title?". It was a Sci-tech position, I answered. He then asked "How much are they paying you?". He was satisfied with my answer to that question but then told me if I had answered with a larger salary amount, he would've turned me back because he didn't feel the position warranted a larger salary. You just never know, it really seems to vary with the officer.

Salary actually is a good indicator of whether the position offered falls within a specific NAFTA occupation and whether there's a misrepresentation. For example, where a low salary is indicated, but the job duties do not correspond (e.g. don't involve specialized knowledge/high level of responsibility), they may suspect fraudulent job duties/job title.
