Hi All,

Just signed up for this group, but I've learned a lot from you guys over the past few months-thanks!

I'm planning on moving to Scotland in April of 2006 with my boyfriend(probably husband by then)but I'm wondering if we'll be able to bring our PC? I know you can't just use a regular adaptor, but are there computers you can buy here that you can also use in the UK?

Thanks, Lynne

You would need to make sure that your computer is switchable voltage. There should be a switch on it to toggle between 110 to 220/240. You would then just need to get a new power lead. I am told the monitor might not be switchable. Also all of your peripherals would have to be switchable as well.
I don't know how common it is to find desktops with the switchable power. We brought over our Apple lap top which was swtichable and we bought a new power cord.
Personally, if it were me I'd sell the old one and get a new one. That way you'd have no issues. The cost of shipping and the fact that you would need to have it packed by someone who knows what they are doing all makes it not worthwhile in my book.

Hey All,

Are laptop computers more expensive in the UK than Canada?

Isn't everything more expensive in the UK?? I haven't found anything cheaper when you do the conversion.

I brought my Apple ibook to the UK and I am so glad I did. I didn't need any special gadgets just a different plug. I was scared I had to buy a voltage conversion but laptops are made for travel.

Make sure and get broadband ASAP as I paid a fortune for dial up my first month.

Sounds like it. Guess I'll find out soon enough. Hope we are not going to lose on this job rotation. I have 3 kids that all need laptops for school, so I wanted to figure out if I should buy them here before we leave, or wait till we get there. Normally, I wouldn't buy them laptops, but because of the amount of travel they will have to do in the next 3 years, I think I should.
