Re-importing and gifting vehicle back to Canada?

Post Sat Apr 03, 2010 2:00 pm

I am a Canadian expat living in Minnesota. I brought my 2005 Ford Escape with me when I moved from Ontario a year ago. I own it outright with no leins or anything on it.

Now I want to give the Escape to my parents who live in Ontario. What do I have to do to make this happen?

I look everywhere and just can't seem to get a straight answer! It is a vehicle made in Canada and originally registered in Canada as well. Any help is greatly appreciated

I'm in the exact same position! I am a Canadian who moved to the US in 2010. I brought my Canadian car with me (I exported it from Canada and imported it into the US). Now, I want to give the car back to my family in Canada.

Can they just drive it back and transfer the ownership back to them afterwards? Or does the car have to go through the whole vehicle importation and RIV process? (doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense, especially paying import duties / taxes on it again!)

It doesn't have to go thru RIV impotation, but you do have to 'export' it from US by reporting to the CBP when you leave US, and declring to Canada customs that you are bringing it back. But there wil be no duties
