Received Ancestry Visa - What do I need for UK immigration?

Post Sun Feb 21, 2010 10:15 pm

Hey everyone!

I received my Ancestry Visa back in January (thanks to all who helped out with my questions!), and I've got a question for anyone who has received theirs!

What documents should I have to supply when I go through immigrations in the UK? Are the copies of what I submitted with my initial application enough? Also, what kind of questions do they ask?

Thanks guys!

I'm not answering your question unfortunately, but asking one. If you received it in January, how long do they give you to make the move once you have it? We want to start the process but are holding off until we're ready to go in case there's a time limit. Thanks!

Hi Chris

I was wondering about the same thing and found out that you can post date the visa for up to 3 months.

Hi all,

I've here in the UK for 2 years and 8 months Canadian passport expires December 2012, but my visa expires Feb 15 2013. I landed in the UK Mar 10, 2008. I cannot apply for right to abode until 5 years to the date. So for that 3 week period where my visa has expired and it could take up to 6 months to obtain the right to abode what do I do in that time, can I still work or do i have to leave the UK.

I have been employed for 2.5 years with the same company which is relocating from London to Manchester I have decided to relocate as I thought it would appeal to the Home Office if i had been working throughout my stay and with the BBC. I work in film and it's usually very transitory so I thought it would best to stay on although I'm not very happy about toughing it out for another 2.5 years.

I was wondering if my mother who was born in 1945 in Canada to British parents if she applied for a UK Passport then i would be able to apply for one based on her then being a british citizen. Then I might be able to avoid this issue of being illegally there.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!

You can apply for ILR (indefinite leave to remain) 28 days before you become eligible, which means that you will be able to apply before your visa expires. Provided that your application is sent before your visa expires, you will be allowed to stay in the UK until your application is decided.

As for your mother's British citizenship, you may be entitled straightaway for right of abode in the UK, but we don't have enough information at this stage to advise properly. It's a very complex area of immigration law, but it would worth considering it.

Thank you for your advise on the ILR. Here is some further information about my Mother.

Parents both born in Scotland in 1906 (Father) and 1910 (Mother). They were married in the mid 1930's in Scotland and immigrated to Canada in 1938. My mother was born in Canada in 1945 married my Canadian father in 1963 and I was born in 1966.

Is there any other information I can supply to find out if my mother is eligible for UK citizenship and therefore my right to abode.

Many thanks I really appreciate this.
