Recession & Plans to move abroad

Post Thu Feb 19, 2009 6:10 pm

Hello! Been a while since I have been around here, but have been thinking about the move over to England alot lately and wanted to poke around a bit.

Our (British Citizen, wife and children) plan is to move over once my husband has been a permanent resident of Canada long enough to apply for Citizenship here in Canada.

We really had our hearts set on it and then the recession hit. My husband is struggling to find work here in Canada still (after being here many years) and I am fully employed.

Is it totally insane for us to consider giving up what stability we do have (knowing so many others are screwed right now) to move to another country and start fresh?

His fear is that he is "aging" and whilst it might be fine to seek/secure work at 36-40, it will only get more difficult as he gets older especially since he hasn't had anything in his field of work since being here.

I know the cost of living and economy is different there, but are there people surviving (and not regretful) with 1 or 2 lower income paid jobs with a family?

I am not naive to the fact that we may have to start from the bottom up in order to pay the bills, but are others here doing that? How are you finding it?

My husband is concerned about making the transition, only to find that we completely screw ourselves and find that we were better off here. He wants this to be a well organized and thought out plan of action and well, I have to admit...we really don't live that sort of lifestyle. Everything is always on the fly...

Any thoughts?
Dying 2 get back 2 England.

Don't make a move unless you have 100% secure employment.

The economy is in the toilet in the UK, getting worse and will be for a long time, we are the worst positioned country in the G10 to deal with it, I run a business and had to let 2 staff go last week.

We had a bigger housing bubble than the US, with more gov't and consumer debt. On the bright side though, as a tax payer you will own a few banks.

I remember the recession of '89, this is much worse. I'm renewing my CDN passports in case my busniness goes south and I need to bail back to Canada.

Officially Canada is economically in the best position of any G7 country at the moment.

The debt to GDP ratio in Canada currently is only 24%. In the US it's 34%. In the UK it's 54% and Japan is 86%.

I think the idea of moving to the UK in the hope of getting a better job is a hell of a long shot frankly unless you're sure you've got something lined up.
Steve.
