Recruitment Agencies

Post Sun Nov 30, 2008 3:49 pm

I'm looking into possible job options in the uk/job finding options and was wondering if anyone could recommend recruitment agencies to get in touch with.

I've also heard that there is a list for needed workers in the uk. does anyone know where I can find this online.

cheers,
cj

Hi cj - it would help if you could say what kind of work you'll be looking for and in what area.

For example, if you're looking for general office work in the London area, I have a number of suggestions you may find useful.

Very true. sorry.

I have a background in management, as well as having delved into creative things. I've worked in arts & food industries in Canada. Not too picky re: work when I arrive, I'd be happy with office work/admin/management.

My partner is a freelance web designer here and we're currently unsure whether or not she'll be pursuing a career here, or maintaining a freelance thing.

Thanks for your assistance.

You could take a look at http://tntonline.co.uk/

This is the website for the giveaway London magazine TNT, which is very much aimed at Commonwealth expats in London. Free copies of the magazine can be picked up from streetside bins all over central London, and contains loads of agency ads aimed at lots of different professions.

It may also be worth posting your CV on http://www.monster.co.uk - others have reported good responses from doing this.

However, if you believe the media, the concensus these days is the good times are over in the job market, so opportunities may be fewer than a couple of years ago.

Something else you may want to consider at the moment is setting up a sterling bank account and changing up some money. CAD is pretty strong against the pound just now.

I've found that recruitment agencies that specialise in specific areas of work are more helpful than the big general ones. For example, I can recommend Charity People who just work with the charity sector. Eden Brown also found me a job.

For the creative industries, I also had success with Bespoke Careers who place people with design and architectural firms - including admin support roles.
(sorry, I'm not allowed to post their websites here, but you'll find them all on google)

Be warned though - they are unlikely to do anything for you until you've met with them face to face, and most of them require you to go in and take tests (for admin roles there's timed typing, word excel etc, and for more creative roles it might be indesign or photoshop etc). Also, I've found that the jobs listed on their websites often only represent a fraction of what is actually available.

For the arts, the Guardian newspaper (particularly on Mondays) is by far your best bet.

One final tip - if you have an address in the UK make sure you put it on your CV, even if you're still in Canada. Most employers will discard any CVs from people not already in England, or even those not in London (assuming you're looking for work in London of course). I learned this the hard way, and then saw it in action while part of the recruitment process at two companies I worked for.

Good luck!

Hi - I help Canadian teachers move to the UK with Classroom Canada, so I know your frustrations well.

The owner of Classroom UK also owns a company called Bentley Associates - http://www.bentleyassociates.co.uk/. The two companies share an office space, so I know the recruiters for Bentley quite well. They specialize more in office work, but the high end of this. They are very selective, so it's tough to get it, but if you send me your resume I can use the Canadian angle for you. They trust me and my judgment, so I can always try anyway. I think it's good to get something short-term for when you first arrive and then focus in more once you've landed.

If you're interested, just send your resume to victoria@classroomcanada.com & remind me what you're looking for so I don't immediately discard your CV (as you're not a teacher). Thanks & good luck!

Does anyone know of any Staff/Recruitment agencies in Canada that can help with job placements, accommodations ..etc in the UK. My Wife is a Social Worker (Master of Social Work - 2 yrs exp) and I'm a Systems Engineer (Computer Science B.S - 4yrs exp). We would like to go January 2010, do you think we may be looking way to early?

Hi all,

If you're a teacher and want to read what it's really like to teach in London, please check out these sites:
1. http://www.classroomcanada.com - this is a Canadian owned and operated teaching recruitment agency.
2. http://www.classroomcanadateachers.blogspot.com - this is the blog written by Classroom Canada's teachers about what it's really like to live & work in London.
3. http://www.classroomcanada.blogspot.com - this is the blog I write about teaching in London and for Classroom Canada. I taught there myself for 3 years.
4. http://www.guidetoteachinginlondon.com - this is the 110 page ebook I wrote to help Canadians understand everything they need to know about teaching in London. I explain how recruitment agencies work, and how to determine if your agency is any good. I also explain how to get the job you want and best practice for teaching in all areas (curriculum, behaviour management, adjusting to British culture, etc.).

I hope these sites help you understand Teaching Recruitment Agencies better.
Thanks!
Victoria Westcott,
Classroom Canada
