Registering an American car in Ontario

Post Fri Aug 06, 2010 5:20 am

Hi! I'm a US citizen, but I'm in University in Ontario. I've lived here a year and a half, but my car still has Florida plates on it. I have an Ontario driver's license. I'm on a student visa that is good through Sept. 2011, but I'm currently applying for permanent residency-- my common-law husband is sponsoring me. Do I need to register my car in Ontario? Do I need to import it? How much does that cost? What about my US insurance? Any advice would be helpful! Thanks so much : )

You should have imported the car when you first moved, or at least once you knoew you would be here more than 12 months

See riv.ca for process.

you are illegaly driving your car in Ontario. once you live in Ontario even as student temporarily you are no longer considered a visitor. According to Provincial law you should have plated your vehicle within 30 days of taking up residency. You also need a Canadian drivers licence.

You should go to the nearest customs office with commercial services and complete a Form 1 for RIV and declare your vehicle. There are no duties or tax as you are importing the vehicle temporarily.

See my site for more details.

good luck and dont get pulled over as your car can be seized.
