Registering in Riskier Areas - Which Embassy?

Post Sat Aug 15, 2009 1:22 pm

Hi Everyone!
I'm new to this site and forum. I'm a Legal Permanent Resident, living in California, and will be traveling to Cartagena, Colombia in several weeks for a tourism promotion thing. In checking out the travel warnings from both the U.S. and Canadian governments, of course, both recommend registering with your embassy when traveling to a riskier area. My question is - since I actually LIVE in the U.S. - with whom should I register? The Canadian embassy? Both? (I think that Canada is the correct answer, but I'm curious as to whether anyone out there actually KNOWS for sure).
Thanks!

I believe if you are a Canadian citizen, you should register abroad with the Canadian consulate. I'm not sure that the US consulate offers the same services to LPRs that they do to citizens, but it may not hurt to register with both. In case you can't get to one or the other if you need them.

As a Canadian citizen, I think the UK and Australian consulates are also open to us, if there is no Canadian consulate, or we can't get to it for some reason.

You register with the embassy of the country you're a citizen of.
