Registering my car in Ontario

Hello...
I actually am temporarily living in Canada while my boyfriend goes to school. We are from New York State. Anyways, today I registered my car with the department of vehicles, and I was surprised that they took the title for my car. Does anyone know what will happen when we want to move back to New York State? Can I get my title back? Thanks everyone for your help!

If you imported the car to Ontario, you will have t re-import it to NY when you move back.
