I was born in Canada in 1951 (Vancouver) and have traveled on a Canadian passport until 1991.
In December 1991 I became a naturalized U.S. citizen. The U.S. oath requires a verbal renunciation of your former country's citizenship, which Canada does not recognize. I have traveled on a US passport since Dec.1991 and I think my Canadian passport expired in 1993. I did not subsequently renew it. It seems through two US Supreme Court rulings and liberalized guidelines from the State Department, that the US now recognizes dual citizenship under many scenarios.
I contacted the Canadian Embassy in Washington explaining the above and was told that the best way to "re-establish" my Canadian citizenship was to apply and receive a Canadian passport. In so doing me have a few questions:
1. It sounds logical, but is the Embassy correct that a new Canadian passport establishes my Canadian citizenship?
2. I have my birth certificate and am this enough, plus the guarantor provisions, to establish my Canadian nationality for obtainment of a passport?
3. Can I apply from the U.S and use a US mailing address? I have not lived or worked in Canada since 1985.
4. From what I understand the Canadian law is clear and the American law is reasonably clear on dual citizenship. However, is there anything I need to know or do in order to not annoy U.S. authorities?
Thank you.
P.G.
