Renewing TN at border crossing

Post Mon May 12, 2008 10:14 am

Hello All,

I have a quick and easy question. I will be renewing my TN at the peace bridge in a month or so. Am I actually required to cross into Canada and immediately cross back into the US to request a TN renewal? Or can I simply stay on the US side and request a TN renewal at a main office who will then direct me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Carol

You have to cross over and come back.
If you "renew" at the border its not considered a renewal or extension of TN Status but a new application.

Okay, thank you. I was hoping to avoid the lineups and the hassle of crossing over but I guess I have no choice.

Thanks again!

Yes you always have to leave the US to apply for TN in person, which is why you can't just drive to your local airport. It has to be a border crossing, or any port of entry if you are returning from another country.

However you do have a choice -- you can pay an immigration lawyer to submit your application by mail. If you have to fly to a border crossing the expense is about the same. It takes longer by mail but you don't have to endure customs agents' nastiness and risk them denying your application and stranding you on the "wrong" side of the border.

If you don't have an immigration lawyer and don't want to pay for one, it may be possible to apply by mail yourself. I don't know about that.
