Reporting Income (foreign income and T2125 self emloyed)

Post Sun Jan 31, 2010 4:58 pm

I live in Canada and self emloyed. I work in the USA most of the time , therefore I pay taxes to the IRS (I do a US tax return).

When I report my income , which is foreign income, do I report on line 104 other employment income and/or on T2125 as income as well?

Also , same questions for tax payed to the USA, where on the Canadian forms do I report this as a self-employed person?

I would like to deduct some of my expenses, I assume I do this on T2125.

Thanks

My husband's company who he worked for in Canada has moved his job to the US and he now has a L1 visa in the states. I am staying behind until our house sells. Are we liable for tax on our house to the US if we sell our house after we move. We have had trouble selling and also we are in the process of making the transition to move but I have not as yet as his spouse.

Are we protected on duel taxation through the Canadian/US tax treaty.

Thanks for your help.

Hi there

I'm wondering if anyone has info/advice on this: I moved to the UAE in August 2009 and so spent over 183 days in Canada, which I think makes me a "deemed resident for tax purposes". Does anyone know if that means I have to declare my "world income" for the remainder of the year? We cut most ties to Canada, except for a few bank accounts and credit cards.

Thank you!

Deemed residence due to number of days in Canada only applies after you've become non-resident.

You are resident until at least August, and report all world income from before that dtae.

However, moving to UAE does not necessarily make you Cdn non-resident after that date, since any ties in Canada including bank accounts etc can make you resident. This is because it is impossible for non-citizens to becomne tax resident of UAE.

You will likely need to filwe NR73 with CRA and have them decide if you are non-resindent after august 2009.
