I don't think it's essential, although immigration may ask about your plans. In the very least you should be able to show that you have sufficient funds to book your ticket back (current bank statement).
Are you sure buying a one way ticket would be much cheaper? I think you'll find that it makes more sense to book a return ticket that would allow you to make a change for free, or for a small charge.
My mother-in-law just booked her round trip ticket and it was just under $2000 including all taxes.
Try these guys, they are almost always cheaper than booking with
Air Canada.

I usually deal with Sherry and she's really helpful. We've booked 3 trips so far with them. They have a particular ticket that will allow you to stay for up to a year, and you can make changes to your return flight while you are there.

P.S. I assume you're going out on a working holiday visa. You will need a visa to work over there.
