Return plane tickets?

Post Thu Sep 04, 2008 6:11 pm

Hey guys, me and a buddy of mine are planning on moving to Australia for a year to work and hang out, and I was just wondering, do I HAVE to have a return ticket? We're pretty tight for money, and if we don't need one, that would save us a lot of money! A round trip ticket I have found is like $2500! So would it be possible to just buy a one way?

I don't think it's essential, although immigration may ask about your plans. In the very least you should be able to show that you have sufficient funds to book your ticket back (current bank statement).

Are you sure buying a one way ticket would be much cheaper? I think you'll find that it makes more sense to book a return ticket that would allow you to make a change for free, or for a small charge.

My mother-in-law just booked her round trip ticket and it was just under $2000 including all taxes.

Try these guys, they are almost always cheaper than booking with Air Canada.

I usually deal with Sherry and she's really helpful. We've booked 3 trips so far with them. They have a particular ticket that will allow you to stay for up to a year, and you can make changes to your return flight while you are there.

Good luck,

Haley
P.S. I assume you're going out on a working holiday visa. You will need a visa to work over there.

Yeh we are gonna grab a working holiday visa, just need to get it still. I hope they don't take too long to get :S. Yeah that website seems way better! I was so bummed that I was going to have to pay 5 grand for this trip! Thanks so much. For the visa do I get one online? I see all these websites claiming for instant approval and things like that, but it seems kind of seedy. lol.

Keep in mind the prices on the main page of that website do not include taxes. I already called about that! But. I do know you can get a long stay ticket for about $2000 return because my mother in law just booked one.

You could also get a multi pass, they run about $2500 I think. The plus side is you get 3 internal flights in the country. You do have to take the flights as well to keep your ticket valid. But it is an option if you know you want to check out a few different places. Definitely call them though and tell them what you want. They'll be able to help you out.

As far as the working visa goes I would go directly through the Australia Immigration website.

There's a link near the bottom that says "How to Apply" and then apply online. Just follow the instructions.

I worried about this too - coming in with no return ticket. I brought a photocopy of my bank statement showing enough money to live on/fly home. In the end, the immigration guy didn't even ask me anything though.
