Returning after 22 years-please Help!

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Returning after 22 years-please Help!

Post Tue Aug 05, 2008 3:21 am

Hi everybody,

I hope you can give me some insight on this, and I need any help I can get, really. :)

I am 28 years old now, Canadian, and left Canada with my family when I was only 6, and now after 22 years and being married, I decided to move back. My parents travelled a lot, so growing up I got to live in Austria, Hungary, Bangladesh, China, Italy and Kuwait, now I am married to a Lebanese man, and am tired of travelling and would like to move back to Canada and settle down for good. I sure did my share of seeing the world, but now, my husband and I would like to settle down and start a family.I currently work at a private American school in Kuwait.

Being away since I was 6 years old, I'm sure I don't have any taxes to pay for the past years, but I would like to get some advice\help, or insight on how difficult it would be to move back, or are there any things I need to look out for when moving back with my husband, who is from Lebanon.
I am a Kindergarten teacher, I have taught at various private schools around the world, and now would like to teach in Canada when I come back, though all my degrees are British. I hope that won't be a problem. :(

Please let me know if there are any things that I need to get done now, or prepare for now, as we are planning on moving back to Toronto next year.

I miss Canada so much, no matter which country I lived in I always found Canada better, nicer, prettier, and yearn to come back badly.

Curious Trish :)

Hi, Trish,

I don't have a lot of experience with the things you are asking about, but I would like to say an early "Welcome Back to Canada!" I do know that a Scottish friend found that his university credentials were not worth much over here, but I am sure that depends on each individual case. You might want to contact a university and ask about transfer credits and how yours would stack up to the Canadian ones. Good luck with your move!

Hi Calliope,

Thanks a lot for the positive response. I have contacted the Canadian embassy since and they were able to give me some helpful information on getting a visa for my husband etc. etc.

Thanks again :)

That's a good start! I'm in B.C. and will be moving to Mexico in a couple of years, so I really appreciate these forums and being able to get info from "real people" to streamline the laborious task of getting to the right departments, etc.

Take care :)
