Returning resident (x-posted on UK branch)

Post Sat May 08, 2004 4:36 am

Hi everyone! I wish I had found this board when I first moved to the UK some 4 yrs ago, but as luck would have it, I'm on my way out...

I'm an ex-pat Canuck coming home for good in September. We've sorted out all of the residency visas etc for my British hubby, and we've even had his permanent resident visa stamped so as far as Immigration Canada are concerned, he's a resident of Canada even though we are still technically living in the UK for the next couple of months.

My question is, what do I have to do? When I left, I never said anything to the Ontario health card people (didn't realize i needed to!), but I don't know if they would still have me on their records, or if I need to alert them I'm back. I still have my healthcard (old style red & white one, not the one that looks like a driver's licence), and as far as I know it's still valid. I've been filing taxes in Canada as well, though my dad said they didn't request anything from me this year, so I suppose I should let them know I'm back when i get there. My driver's licence is still valid and current... is there anything else I need to do?

And a related question, can anyone recommend a good shipping company UK (London) to Canada (Toronto)? We're flying over with Zoom, and are thinking of sending stuff by cargo with them. Any thoughts?

Hi
I have moved stuff from the Uk to Canada using !st Move (http://www.shipit.co.uk/international_r ... canada.htm) ans as far as I know just show up and send off the old health cards and you will get knew ones (but I live in Nova Scotia)....your spouse needs a Landed Immigrant Card to get in - but I expect you've done that....
I dont want to be negative, but apart from the expense - why would you want to leave merry ole Engaland? I left the UK 20 years a go..went back for a year...moved back to canada and now wish I was there again! Ah well "the grass seems always greener..."! You will miss the Spring / farms/ trees / pubs / holiday places / public transport etc...!
Best of luck
Cheers

Hi,
As you've been outside of Ontario for a number of years you'll probably going to have to re register with OHIP. I beleive if you've been outside of the province for more than 180 days in any 12 month period this applies.

When you rejoin OHIP you'll have a 90 day waiting period before your insurance cover becomes effective so your gonna need interim cover for this period.

Check out www.canadasure.com who have a plan that insures you for the flight back to Canada from any worldwide location and the 90 day waiting period.

Good luck
