returning to Canada after 2.5 year assignment - ?s

Postby jp02ti » Sun May 18, 2008 1:48 pm

Hello all,
my family and i are returning to Canada after living in Georgia for 2.5 years. i have a couple questions I was hoping to get answered here:
1. contents: I will be driving the moving truck across the border. I assume I'll need a contents list of everything in the vehicle, but are there forms I need, and can I download them? do they need to be filled out in advance and sent to the border, I do we just show up with them?
2. Vehicles: I'll be bringing three vehicles back with me. i know when you bring a vehicle into Canada that has just been purchased and is not titled in the US in your name then you need to fax a copy of some forms to the US DIT at the border, but it seems that only applies to a car that is not in your name when you are corssing? what about three vehicles that are titled in my name and will be titled in my name in Ontario?

thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions. i'll be doing research and making some calls, so if I find out anything interesting I'll post answers to my own questions.

thanks!

You'll find some great information here.
http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/hel ... 5-eng.html

There are forms, but I did a spreadsheet with all the values because I was having mine shipped as 'goods to follow'. You can't sell anything for one year after import and since you have not been out for 5 years, you can only bring back, duty & tax free, personal items that have been in use for 6 months, or that were purchased specifically as replacement items. You still have the $750 exception to cover some new articles as well. Also, any single item worth over $10,000 is subject to duties and taxes on the excess amount.

Your vehicles have to be exported from the US and imported into Canada. I’m not sure if you have to notify Canada in advance, but I believe that the US border agents need the ownership paperwork at least 3 days in advance of the vehicles coming through and land crossing, so check that out as well. You may have to pay some taxes on the vehicles, so check that out as well.

Check the riv.ca website for all information pertaining to the Canadian end and to see if your cars are on the list of those that can be imported and what modifications, if any, you would have to do. Once again, you won’t be able to sell it for at least one year.

Here's some US export info.
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_ ... ehicle.xml
Click the import/export link on the right and you'll see the information about sending the documents at least 3 days in advance of showing up at a land crossing.

This is my interpretation and experience, so please verify everything for yourself.

Do a google search for CBSA forms B4 and B4A. Those are the two forms you will need the most.

Look at www.riv.ca for the information on importing vehicles from the US.
