Returning to Canada - Rant

Post Mon Oct 16, 2006 11:37 am

Hello All,

So it's likely that I will be returning to Canada. Every lawyer, politician and civil servant I've spoken to is absolutely shocked that my visa can't be transferred if I stay in the country. So, it seems that I will have to return to Canada in order to apply for my spousal visa. Apparently from Ottawa it takes about 15days, and lawyers have said that I have no reason to be turned down from abroad.

What I don't get is that it isn't really making anyone's lives easier having this stupid rule. They aren't accomplishing anything by sending me abroad to apply at the British High Commission in Canada for heaven's sake. How on earth could a honeymoon negate the whole process I've had to go through in order to get married to a Brit?

It's a farce. The whole bloody system! ARGH!

Awwww, crappy! Sorry to hear you have been caught up in bureaucratic nonsense. Sigh. Takes me back to when we were living in Belgium, if you think the U.K. is bad, think again! My hubby was deported TWICE because the wrong stamps were put into his passport in Ottawa, TWICE! Thank god the company paid for his return trips to sort it all out. Can you believe people get paid to make our lives a misery? Hope you can get your mess sorted out and then get back to your life with your hubby. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Laura :)

Thanks Laura!

I hope that everything works out well. The website says that they process applications within 15days which is a whole heck of a lot better than here. I just hope they don't hold it against me that I have been refused a visa because of some bureaucratic mumbo jumbo.

Glad to hear that I'm not having to deal with the ins and outs of the Belgium government!

Thanks for your support,

A.

Visa

Not sure whether a spousal visa would take the same amount of time as an entry clearance visa, but if it is any consolation, the British Consulate in Ottawa was really quick in turning around my visa. They received my application via courier on Tuesday and I had my visa in my hand on the Thursday.

I would suggest filling out the application and paying for it on line though, which is what I did and may have helped to speed up the process.

Because I am in a similar situation (going on honeymoon) and I can't get the full details from your other posts, do you mind outlining what happened, so that I can avoid it happening to me? PM me if you don't want to post details.

Ie/ What kind of visa were you initially on?
How long was left on the visa when you went on the honeymoon?
How long was your honeymoon / how long was left on the visa when you returned to the UK?

Thanks, much appreciated.
