Returning to Canada without a passport

If I lost my passport while in the U.S. and show up by car at a border crossing, will I be able to re-enter the country. (I carry a valid Quebec driver's license and I am a canadian citizen)?

I believe that if you have proof of Canadian citizenship (a Quebec driver's license wouldn't qualify by itself) you can still enter Canada from the USA by land even without a passport. Going the reverse direction is no longer possible.
