right of abode and benefits in the UK

Post Mon May 24, 2010 9:14 am

I am a Senior Citizen and have moved to the UK from Canada with my husband who has UK citizenship. I have just received a certificate of entitlement to right of abode in the UK and now want to obtain a free bus pass from my local District Council [Chichester]. On their form they are asking for either a Pension Number or a National Insurance number, neither of which I have. Can i obtain these or is there another way around this?

Really the best advice I can give you is to contact your local council and explain your situation to them - it's a difficult road here in the UK unfortunately, they will advise you on how to obtain an NI number - this you will get from the govt. I will you luck and sorry I couldn't be more help but do contact the council

You should phone the national insurance registrations help line (0845) 915 7006. They will likely arrange an appointment for you at your local office of Job Centre Plus. This is a face to face meeting to establish your identity so take your passport with you. The NI number is then issued within about two weeks of the interview.
