Right of Abode/work visa

Post Wed Feb 21, 2007 9:44 am

I'm heading to the UK this Tuesday and I had the right of abode on my old passport and tragically assumed when i got my new passport it would transfer over.
Now i'm heading the the uk with just my passport, i dont think there is enough time for a work visa to be issued and i was told that i can't get the right of abode while in the UK.

any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated as i'd like to work legally while i'm over.

Can you not just bring your old passport with your right of abode? (that's what I do with my spouse visa)

I thought it was illegal to travel with two passports? I hope it's that easy, when i called the British High Commission about it they said i'd have to go through the whole process again and pay another $214.00

Hopefully you're right!

I'm pretty sure that you can carry both passports as Joanne suggests. You old passport will be cancelled as a passport (the corners should be cut off) but the visa still applies.

Thanks a lot for the info!
I've never had corners cut off a passport before, do i have to take it in to get officially snipped or is it something you did yourself? Sorry if that's a stupid question.

thanks again

When I renewed my passport, I sent my old one in with it. They cut the corners off the pages and also stamped each page as cancelled. But I got it renewed in London - so I don't know if they do it differently?

They cut the corners too for mine but if they did not do it for yours I would leave it has it is. The old passport is just to show your visa, you show your new one first and explain to them that you have a visa in the old one.
It's not illegal to travel with 2 passports, the only thing is, if you have dual citizenship you have to use the same one for your flight (you cannot get in the plane let's stay with a Canadian passport and land and use your British passport, it has to be the same one for that flight).
hope this helps !
