i'm in desperate. i'll be studying in cologne in october this year, while i'm not a canuck (and will not try to pretend to be one here), i'd be most grateful if you could tell me which area in cologne would be best to find a room, as i'm looking for somewhere near university of cologne. i think the university hostel is pretty tough to get in, hence this desperate cry for help.

Even though you are not a Canuck, I am still willing to help you or can try.

I was only at the University for one semester and that was to learn German and I wasn't at the University residence. A friend of mine is currently a student but unfortunately away on vacation right now. When she returns I will get more info. from her as to where the best locations are and how to apply.

Have you asked the University for help? Look at their website as there might be tips there.

I will write again next week and I hope to be a bit more help then.

thank you so much for your reply & offer to help; i did try to apply for university hostel & the chances are slim, as there're so many students in cologne & so few hostel rooms avalaible....so most likely i will end up having to look for a room myself. please do let me know if you have any further info from your friend. thanks very much!!

Hi everyone,

I just moved to Meerbusch a month ago (from Toronto, well sort of - Newmarket). I am only staying in Germany for around 6 months. I am also planning to take a German Course while I am here. My German is pretty good but I really need to expand my vocabulary because saying everything is schön gets a little redundant.

I was wondering if any of you knew the best place to take german courses, since I work during the day (sorry for all you with the work permit problems, I am a dual citzen (Canada & Britain) so being part of the EU I did not need a visa). They would need to be evening courses and hopefully in the city. I have looked into the Volkshochschule but kinda get lost on their website.

Dear Tara,

I can relate to the Volkshochschule website. Just go into any of your local bookstores and they will have a class schedule for the school. Their German courses start at the end of the month. I know because I am starting there myself at the end of the month. What are you in Germany for?

Hi Sherrie,

I actually signed up last week and it wasn't that bad, so Deutsch als Fremdsprache here I come! Although the course is 2 nights a week and I only wanted one but oh well!

I am here on a six month work placement. My company sent me over here to help with the migration of all their old computer systems to the world wide system. I am not an IT person but I have used the program for a while in Canada and they just wanted a person to be accessable to answer questions whenever they arise. It is consulting work.
