Is home schooling allowed in France? or must the children be registered and attend school in the system.

yes of course it is.
But as France adores bureaucracy, they prefer that you register with thelocal prefecture. If you are capable of homeschooling in french, there is a private correspondence school that will simplify your life. They register students, grades papers, and provide all the curriculum needed for students up to the end of highschool. The school is called
cours-pi (you'll have to search it, the system won't let me post the addy)

It’s not just that the French love bureaucracy, all children in France are under the final jurisdiction of the state. The French school system is in my mind second to none. My children went to Grammar school in the UK and also to the local school in France and the difference is quite remarkable. Unless you have a very good reason, I would send your kids to the local school. They will integrate quicker and certainly learn the language quicker too.

There are also On-line school options here in Canada, that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Depending on your situation, this might be something worth looking into. Particularly if your kids are in high school and looking soon to return to Canada for university. These schools are more prominent in some provinces than others (they are quite big in AB and BC), but are an option for a child from any province. I have family living in North Africa and they are choosing this option for their three oldest children and my own brothers did the same thing. These are provincially accreditted, and with this system, all your lessons and assignments are recievd (and submitted) online. Also you have a whole learning community ("school") that is also online and that you can discuss your learning with. The teachers are available online, yet you still have the priveledge of having your children near and being very involved in their education. Let me know if you want a few suggestions.

PS -- as a note I don't know of any that serve the younger years. Most that I am familiar with start in grade 7.
